Erik Becker

Erik Becker is an award-winning film and television executive producer and director, and the founder of InkBlot Narratives, an independent production company. Over the course of his career he has produced and directed premium series for Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and Discovery+, developing a practiced sense of what it takes to hold the attention of a large audience across an arc.

As Chief Creative Officer of the Trace Institute, Erik sets the creative and editorial vision for how the scientific program reaches the world. His focus spans documentary production, film and video, and the overall creative direction of the Institute's public-facing work. His production background gives him the tools to translate the Institute's most rigorous ideas into work that a broader public can encounter without them being flattened.

Erik's path to Trace runs through storytelling. Spending years shaping documentary narratives gave him a particular way of seeing science: the mathematics of physics is provable and binding, but the moment we try to say what it means, what the measurement problem implies, what the observer is doing, what reality actually is, we are telling a story. Every interpretation of quantum mechanics is a narrative laid over the same equations, an attempt to make the math livable. Erik's interest is in noticing that, in taking the interpretive layer seriously as interpretation, and in resisting the tendency to crown the most popular story as truth while dismissing the rest as fantasy. He came to Hoffman's work because it follows the math where it leads rather than where intuition wants it to go, and because a science willing to question its own most comfortable stories is exactly the kind worth telling stories about.
